Valentine's Day
It is getting to be that time of year - Valentine's Day! A day of love, candy, and roses! What do you do to celebrate Valentine's Day? Take your lady out to dinner? Give flowers and candy to your loved one? Pass out cards to your friends?
Some think that Valentine's Day is just a Hallmark holiday made up to generate sales....You know who you are! Actually, Valentine's Day is the second largest holiday for gift giving, decorations, and the overall spending your paycheck. It probably also ranks right up there as one of the messiest of holidays in terms of preparation; lots of glitter, paper shreds, and glue. Remember giving valentines to ALL of your classmates in order to be fair and not leave anyone out? That was a good socialist idea made up by your teacher to keep feelings from getting hurt, however, do you remember picking out the corniest or ugliest card for the kid you didn't care for, you know, the one who picked his nose or called you names? I must admit that I did the same thing. On the other hand, you would cling to that Snoopy valentine from your true love that asked you to "be mine" like it was a marriage proposal. Some people save these cards for years...again, you know who you are.
And don't even get me started on the little heart candies with the love words on them like "be mine", "love you", "kiss me", etc., in all their chalky grossness. If your love gives you those, my first thought would be "too cheap to buy the good stuff?" A word to any helpless guy out there hoping to impress a girl he stares at every day in class. Chocolate, baby! That is the only way to go! And not those mystery bon-bons with chocolate covered orange goo or chocolate laced coconut that has the texture of a hairball. Think Dove, Godiva, Hersheys, etc. and don't even consider anything from Brach's or Willie Wonka. Blech!
All in all, just be yourself. Pick the best little Madagascar or Transformers card you can find (or draw your own), and double-stick tape a Hershey's kiss to it. Close your eyes and put that Valentine bravely in your love's Valentine box and know that you have done the best with what's available.
Valentine's Day or not, we should all let our friends know that they are loved and spread that sweetness all around. It is better than candy and lasts a lot longer that just one Hallmark holiday. ;)

I once loved girl who could catch Oreos in her mouth if you threw one in her direction. One day while she wasn't looking, I accidentally dropped one of the cookies on the floor in my hi-rise apartment. Without thinking, I got rid of the contaminated morsel through an open window. Needless to say that ended our short but sweet romance.
